Mark Titchiner

Mark primarily works with wood fired slipware, the technique which has been practiced by the peasant potters of Europe for centuries.

The process involves applying layers of liquid clay, then brushed pigment and glaze, one upon the other, directly onto the raw damp pots.

This requires a free and spontaneous approach to the work as the method prohibits the slightest hesitation. When the pots are dry they are packed into the wood kiln which is fired with the help of a crew of four 'stokers' over a two day period.

Mark trained in a Hampshire pottery under the watchful eye of an old time plant pot maker and a group of graduates from Farnham Art School. At Farnham he later attended the ceramics course run by Henry Hammond, a pupil of Bernard Leach.

Mark has exhibited throughout the UK, France and New Zealand.
His work can be found in public and private collections including the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge.
